Volkswagen has officially unveiled the all-new ID. Cross, a compact electric SUV that will sit alongside the recently launched ID. Polo as part of the brand’s growing family of affordable electric vehicles.

Positioned as an electric alternative to the popular T-Cross, the new model combines compact dimensions with a surprisingly spacious interior, a range of up to 427km (265 miles), and technology previously reserved for much more expensive vehicles.

But perhaps the biggest question for Volkswagen enthusiasts is whether the ID. Cross can capture the same appeal that made models such as the Polo, Golf and T-Cross household names.

A Familiar Formula, Reimagined for the Electric Age

At first glance, the ID. Cross follows a recipe that Volkswagen knows well.

It’s compact enough for everyday use, practical enough for family duties, and designed to offer a premium feel without a premium price tag. In Germany, prices are expected to start from €27,995, placing it firmly in the increasingly competitive compact EV market.

Measuring just over 4.1 metres long, the ID. Cross is slightly larger than the current T-Cross and benefits from Volkswagen’s dedicated MEB+ electric platform. The result is more passenger space and a larger boot than its petrol-powered counterpart.

Volkswagen claims the luggage compartment offers 475 litres of storage, plus an additional 25-litre front compartment beneath the bonnet for charging cables and smaller items.

More Than Just Another Electric SUV

One criticism often levelled at modern SUVs is that many look interchangeable. Volkswagen is clearly hoping the ID. Cross avoids that fate.

The new model introduces the latest version of the company’s “Pure Positive” design language, featuring a distinctive floating roofline, pronounced rear pillar and a clean, uncluttered appearance.

Higher-specification models gain illuminated VW badges, matrix LED headlights and full-width lighting signatures front and rear, giving the ID. Cross, what Volkswagen call, a more premium look than many rivals. We’re not so sure that these full-width light strips look premium – they remind us of a “Max Power” era.

Inside, Volkswagen has made a conscious effort to improve material quality. Fabric-covered dashboard surfaces, redesigned controls and softer-touch materials aim to create a cabin that feels more substantial than some early electric models.

A Touch of Nostalgia for Volkswagen Enthusiasts

Aside from the Max Power lighting strips, one of the more interesting features for long-time Volkswagen enthusiasts is the optional retro instrument display.

Activate the feature, and the digital dashboard transforms to mimic the instruments of a Mk1 Golf, complete with classic-style gauges. It’s a small detail, but one that acknowledges Volkswagen’s heritage while embracing modern technology.

Whether this becomes a novelty that owners use once or a genuinely popular feature remains to be seen, but it’s a welcome nod to the brand’s history.

ID. Cross Range, Performance and Charging

Volkswagen will offer the ID. Cross with three power outputs:

• 116 PS (85 kW)
• 135 PS (99 kW)
• 211 PS (155 kW)

Two battery options will be available:

• 37 kWh battery
• 52 kWh battery

The larger battery delivers a claimed WLTP range of up to 427 kilometres (265 miles), while DC rapid charging can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in around 23-24 minutes under ideal conditions.

Vehicle-to-load functionality comes as standard, allowing owners to power external equipment from the vehicle’s battery – useful for camping, outdoor events and charging e-bikes.

Technology from Further Up the Range

Volkswagen has packed the ID. Cross with features usually associated with larger and more expensive models.

Depending on the specification, buyers can choose:

• Connected Travel Assist with traffic light recognition
• 360-degree Area View cameras
• Remote smartphone parking
• Adaptive DCC suspension
• Harman Kardon premium audio system
• 12-way electrically adjustable massage seats
• Panoramic glass roof

The availability of massage seats in a compact Volkswagen SUV is perhaps one of the more surprising additions.

Practicality Remains a Priority

Unlike some electric vehicles that focus heavily on technology and styling, Volkswagen appears keen to position the ID. Cross as a genuine all-rounder.

The larger battery model can tow up to 1,200kg, while the generous interior space and flexible luggage area should make it a realistic family car rather than simply an urban runabout.

In many ways, it follows the same philosophy that helped make the Golf and Polo such long-term successes: practicality first, with technology added where it genuinely improves the ownership experience.

Could the ID. Cross Become a Volkswagen Bestseller?

Volkswagen has already described the ID. Polo as an attempt to create an electric “people’s car”, and the ID. Cross feels like the natural companion to that strategy.

While enthusiasts will inevitably continue to debate the future of internal combustion engines, the ID. Cross represents another significant step in Volkswagen’s effort to make electric cars more accessible and appealing to mainstream buyers.

The combination of sensible pricing, respectable range, generous equipment levels and everyday practicality certainly gives it the ingredients needed for success.

The biggest challenge may simply be convincing traditional combustion engine buyers to make the jump.

If the ID. Polo is aiming to become the electric Polo of the future, then the ID. Cross could well become the electric SUV that introduces an entirely new generation of drivers to the Volkswagen brand.
