Big Bertha - the story so far... - Uploaded by richard.bibby

This is the story of Big Bertha, my Mk3 Golf Estate. I hope to make this a magazine feature one day! I got her as a quick fix emergency car, the plan being to keep it until the MOT was up then get something else. The only unusual thing about it at the time was the plastic boot liner, which is an original VW accessory. However, I soon discovered that I would need four new tyres long before the MOT was due, but in the nick of time I spotted a set of alloys for sale, with four good tyres of the right size, which worked out much cheaper. Once on they enhanced the look of the car no end, so I found myself abandoning my original plan and turning the car into a bit of a "rolling project". So far, in addition to the alloys, I have replaced a rear seatbelt which was broken, replaced the badly scratched front bumper - that was a job and a half! - and best of all, fitted original front fog lights from a GTi. These really improve the appearance, especially after a wash! Next on the list will be some wheelarch trims, and there is also a rather crude patch weld on one of the sills which needs tidying up. Other than that, I may invest in a nice GTi interior, and possibly even an engine upgrade - although finding one with less miles than my current 87k is proving difficult! So that's where we're up to, but watch this space for more updates!
